ukiyo-e: nature outside and in
November 22, 2008 - February, 2009Hurst Gallery opens its annual exhibition and sale of Japanese woodblock prints (Ukiyo-e) on November 22nd. The exhibition runs through January 10th and features images of the natural world, including landscapes, bucolic activities, flora and fauna, and the interplay of exterior and interior spaces and experiences. Japanese love of nature is reflected in these images that show both the exploration of the outer world by the otherwise very urbane as well as the incorporation of nature into their urbane ambiance. The realm of nature depicted in this exhibition expands beyond naturalistic representations of animals and plants to include mythic animals and forces engaging with the terrestrial world as well.
Nearly all the prints presented in the exhibition are being shown at the Gallery for the first time. Hurst Gallery maintains has a large inventory of Japanese woodblocks which will be available for viewing and purchase throughout the exhibition. The exhibition will be available for viewing on the Hurst Gallery website, www.hurstgallery.com, complete with prices and catalogue information, beginning the week of the opening.
