Throwing club (ula)
Fiji
Wood
19th century
L: 15.5 in. (39.37 cm), D: 3.75 in. (9.525 cm)

The easily portable throwing club was the Fijian's everyday weapon in peaceful times when it was not necessary to carry a heavy spear or club. A man would carry as many as three "I ula" thrust into his waistband. Although sometimes used as a bludgeon in close combat or to execute captives, the throwing club was primarily hurled at an enemy to kill him outright or stun and cripple him so that he could be safely approached and dispatched subsequently. See similar examples (figs. 20, 21) in Clunie, Fergus. 1977. Fijian Weapons and Warfare, Bulletin no. 2. Suva: Fiji Museum.
