Greenstone axe
Mount Hagen, Western Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea
Wood, greenstone, fiber
Early 20th century
H: 24 in. (60.96 cm), W: 32 in. (81.28 cm)

This is an exceptionally fine old ceremonial axe; the large, sharp, thinly crafted greenstone blade is loosely set in the well patinated hardwood handle, with elaborate basketry binding. The shaft is carved with an extended heel to balance the heavy stone blade. These axes were important ceremonial dance accessories, and were also ritually exchanged during social transactions.
