Vessel in the form of a prone Prairie Dog
Comala style, Colima, Mexico
Redware pottery
100 BC - 250 AD
L: 9.5 in. (24.13 cm)

This lively representation of a prairie dog or gopher is similar to one in the collection of the Denver Museum of Natural History. The pre-Columbian menu included a wide variety of plant and animal entrees including ingredients like the present example, as archaeological examination of midens and trash deposits indicates. Depictions of animals and plant foods were subjects for the Colima potter, whose wares were interred with the deceased for spiritual nourishment in afterlife.

Scientific classification: "Cynomys", or "Geomyidae" family.
