Figure of a Dog
Comala style, Colima, Mexico
Pottery
100 BC - 250 AD
L: 13.25 in. (33.655 cm), H: 8 in. (20.32 cm)

Dogs were a favorite subject of the Comala potter. This example depicts the animal with an open mouth revealing the teeth, and concentric wrinkle lines enveloping the head thus connoting the animal's snarling aspect. Dogs were valued as guides and guardians as well as being potential nourishment for the deceased, whose long and difficult journey to the next world would be eased and facilitated by companions such as this.

Scientific classification: "Canis familiaris".
