UKIYO-E: DESIGNS FROM THREE CENTURIES

Hurst Gallery regularly offers Japanese woodblock prints; however, this selection constitutes an unusually large group for the gallery. Based upon the acquisition of a large New England family estate collection, the gallery has added designs from a few other sources to this present exhibition and sale. Of the over 60 works in this presentation, most were created by artists born, and in many cases, actually working before 1800. There are works by many well-known and often-encountered masters, including Eizan, Hiroshige, Hokusai, Toyokuni, and Utamaro. However, there are also designs, many very rare, by Kiyonaga, Kiyotsune, Shuncho, Shunei, and Toyohiro.

As you browse this online gallery, please be aware that the 40 prints presented online are representative of the collection on view at the gallery. We will gladly answer inquiries about the other prints in the show. Price lists and condition reports are also available upon request.

Visitors to the exhibition may find unfamiliar designs or states of designs and will have the opportunity to view and acquire work by artists they may never before have encountered for sale. The prints include depictions of the pleasure quarter and its inhabitants, landscapes, and theatrical subjects.

Many of the prints were acquired in the early 20th century, when interesting and unusual prints from this classic period were more readily available and affordable.

The exhibition will be on view through the holiday season at Hurst Gallery's second floor exhibition space.
